Cormac Sofa
2025 Porada International Design Award
I designed the Cormac Sofa for the 2025 Porada International Design Award, where this year's theme challenged designers to create a sofa.
Cormac is a modular seating system defined by a continuous sculptural timber shell that appears to be formed from a single folded plane. Each module combines a solid Canaletto Walnut frame and backrest, seamlessly joined so the entire outer structure reads as one uninterrupted surface that bends and wraps around the upholstered seating. This folded gesture creates a strong architectural form while soft black leather cushions provide contrast through their restrained, inviting appearance.
The modular construction allows the user to customise the sofa's overall length by adding or removing centre modules. This system enables the design to adapt to a range of residential spaces without compromising the integrity of its continuous folded form.
As the competition requires the proposal to integrate naturally within Porada's existing collection, I drew inspiration from the brand's distinctive use of sculptural solid timber. Like Porada's Softbay Sofa, Cormac celebrates the relationship between expressive wooden forms and refined upholstery. Rather than using timber as a structural element alone, the wood becomes the defining visual language of the piece, enveloping the cushions in a continuous folded shell that gives the sofa its unique identity.
