Te Taiao Playscape

Industry brief from PlayCo

Te Taiao Playscape

The 'Sun Steps' transition piece.

This brief tasked our group of six with creating a themed playscape to fit into the existing catalogue of New Zealand playground company, Playco. We chose a Māori theme as a way of grounding the playscape in Aotearoa’s cultural identity and creating a strong connection to the local environment. The concept draws inspiration from Māori forms, patterns, legends/pūrākau and relationships with the natural world, allowing these elements to be translated into a playful and engaging environment for children.

My role in this project involved extensive research on our chosen theme, ensuring that it was engaging, culturally relevant/appropriate, and aligned with Playco's brand values. I contributed to the ideation process, brainstorming and sketching various playground pieces that would be both fun and safe for children. Additionally, I played a significant part in the concept development phase, refining these ideas into cohesive, innovative designs that could be seamlessly integrated into Playco's existing catalogue.

Through collaboration with my team, I helped bring our vision to life, ensuring that each element of the playscape was well-thought-out and met the needs of our target audience. The Sun Steps transition piece was my most involved piece, having come up with the initial idea and developed it all the way through to the final model.
