Shizuka Bed
A flat-pack platform bed frame with Japanese roots.

I embarked on this project with the aim of capturing the beauty inherent in native Japanese furniture. Inspired by the low-to-the-ground style common in Japanese homes, I designed a bed frame that not only embraces this aesthetic but also helps to escape the night heat. While it appears to be a traditional solid platform, the bed features a slat design that enhances breathability and support.

Using nest optimisation to determine the most efficient alignment of pieces on the stock material.
I modelled this bed frame in Fusion 360 and used nest optimisation to determine the most efficient alignment of pieces on the stock material, minimising cuts and waste. This approach allowed me to use only three sheets of 18mm plywood. To give the visible parts of the frame a more robust appearance and added strength, I doubled the thickness of every component, except for the slats, by gluing and clamping corresponding planks together.
The frame features dowel joints throughout, and hidden bolts secured into threaded inserts where additional strength is needed. The bed can be fully assembled using just a allen key and can be packed flat into a single box for convenient shipping.
